Past Simple Tense in English
The Past Simple tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened in the past. These actions are finished and usually connected to a specific time. For example:
- “I visited Paris last year.” (a specific time in the past)
- “She called her friend yesterday.” (a finished action)
Positive:
- I downloaded a new app yesterday.
- She finished her homework last night.
- They went to a concert last weekend.
Negative:
- I didn’t call him last week.
- He didn’t play any games yesterday.
- We didn’t watch the football match.
Question:
- Did you see the new movie?
- Did she cook dinner last night?
- Did they visit the museum on Saturday?
How to form the Past Simple:
- Positive: Use the past form of the verb. Regular verbs end in -ed (e.g., walk → walked). Irregular verbs have different forms (e.g., go → went).
- Negative: Use did not (didn’t) + base verb.
- Question: Use did at the beginning of the sentence + base verb.

Irregular verbs
If a verb is irregular, we have to know the form of the verb in the past tense.

- Sentence: She heard a strange noise coming from the basement.

- Sentence: I knew the answer to the question.
