The Future Continuous Tense in English
The future continuous tense is used to talk about actions that will be happening at a specific time in the future. It’s great for describing ongoing activities or predicting future situations.
It is like the Present Continuous Tense but for the future.
When Do We Use the Future Continuous?
1. To describe an action in progress at a future time
These actions will still be happening at a specific moment in the future.
- At 10 AM tomorrow, she will be giving a presentation.
- Next week at this time, we will be sailing on the Mediterranean Sea.
- I will be working as a sales assistant from November to December.
2. To ask politely about someone’s plans
This is often used to avoid sounding too direct when making inquiries.
- Will you be attending the meeting tomorrow morning?
- Will she be using the projector during her presentation?
- Will they be staying at the hotel this weekend?
3. To predict future events
This shows what you believe will be happening at a certain time in the future.
- By 2025, more people will be working remotely.
- During the holiday season, stores will be offering big discounts.
- When we arrive, they will be setting up the decorations.
How Do We Make the Future Continuous?
The future continuous is formed with:
will + be + verb (-ing)
Examples:
- Positive: I will be working late tonight.
- Negative: I will not be working late tonight.
- Question: Will you be working late tonight?
