Giving advice in English

Here are 5 ways to start your sentence when giving advice in English.

1. Start with “You should” or “You could”

These are very common ways to offer advice. They’re direct but friendly.

  • You could watch that new movie on Netflix. It’s so good!

2. Use “Why don’t you…”

This phrase is perfect for suggestions and sounds super casual.

  • Why don’t you take a break? You’ve been working hard.

3. Be Polite with “If I were you…”

This is great for advice in tricky situations. It’s polite and makes it sound like you’re sharing your opinion.

  • If I were you, I’d talk to the manager about your schedule.
  • If I were you, I’d start studying earlier for the exam.

4. Make it a suggestion with “Maybe you could…”

This phrase is soft and less direct, great for not sounding pushy.

  • Maybe you could try learning yoga for stress.

5. Keep it casual with “How about…” or “What about…”

These phrases make your advice sound more like a friendly idea.
