Here are 5 ways to start your sentence when giving advice in English.
1. Start with “You should” or “You could”
These are very common ways to offer advice. They’re direct but friendly.
- You should try this new restaurant. Their pizza is amazing!
- You could watch that new movie on Netflix. It’s so good!
2. Use “Why don’t you…”
This phrase is perfect for suggestions and sounds super casual.
- Why don’t you join us for the picnic tomorrow?
- Why don’t you take a break? You’ve been working hard.
3. Be Polite with “If I were you…”
This is great for advice in tricky situations. It’s polite and makes it sound like you’re sharing your opinion.
- If I were you, I’d talk to the manager about your schedule.
- If I were you, I’d start studying earlier for the exam.
4. Make it a suggestion with “Maybe you could…”
This phrase is soft and less direct, great for not sounding pushy.
- Maybe you could ask for help if the project feels too big.
- Maybe you could try learning yoga for stress.
5. Keep it casual with “How about…” or “What about…”
These phrases make your advice sound more like a friendly idea.
- How about we go for a walk to clear our heads?
- What about trying that new coffee shop downtown?
