The second conditional is used to talk about imaginary or unreal situations in the present or future. It describes what could happen, might happen, or would happen if a certain condition were met.
How to form the second conditional
- If + past simple, would + base verb
- Example: If I had superpowers, I would fly around the world.
When do we use it?
- Imaginary or unreal situations:
If I were a millionaire, I would start my own business. - Dreams or wishes:
If I could travel anywhere, I would go to Japan. - Unreal situations about abilities:
If I spoke better English, I would present at the conference.
